Resignation of Bishop Charles Drennan
Bishop Charles Drennan has resigned as Bishop of Palmerston North.
His resignation follows a complaint that was made by a young woman of behaviour that is unacceptable in the eyes of the Church. The young woman who made the complaint has requested that the detail is not shared publicly to protect her privacy. It was not a criminal matter.
Information and support are being provided to all organisations that are members of the Palmerston North diocese, including Catholic churches and schools.
Information about this resignation and the complaint was shared in Sunday mass on 6 October and support is being offered to parishioners. Likewise, Catholic school teaching staff will be meeting first thing Monday morning to ensure that staff are well equipped to manage any situation where a young person may be affected by this matter. At the discretion of the Principal and taking into consideration the age of the students, a notice will also be read to students at the beginning of the day. We are taking this action to ensure that all students are fully supported.
Information will be sent directly to all parents and guardians who are part of our Catholic school community. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me:
